If you are making empanadas at home, then the first thing you will need is some empanada dough. The dough is one of the most important part of the recipe. There are plenty of ways to make empanada dough that will be best for specific recipes. However, if you just need a quick basic recipe that has a flavor that can fit all types of empanadas, then this is the one for you. With only a couple of easy to find ingredients, you can make your dough in about half an hour to an hour.
You only need around half a dozen ingredients for this recipe. You will also want a clean surface to roll your dough out on and a roller. This recipe makes enough dough for around a dozen medium empanadas. If you are using the largest size Machika dough press, then it will come out to a couple less. If you do not have a dough roller, then a wine bottle or any other tall circular glass bottle will work. To make this dough recipe, you will need:
1 large egg
4 cups of all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon of salt
1 ½ sticks of unsalted butter (6 oz)
¼ cup of water or milk
(use another ¼ cup if necessary)
Mix 3 cups of flour and ½ teaspoon of salt into a mixing bowl and combine.
Cube your sticks of butter and add to your dough.
Mix thoroughly until most of the butter has melted into the flour.
Add your egg and then slowly add your water or milk while mixing with your hands.
When all the liquid has mixed into the dough to form a ball, you are done. You store the ball in your fridge overnight in some plastic wrap.
To cut, simply coat a surface with your remaining cup of all-purpose flour and roll out your dough.
Then use the reverse side of your Machika Dough Press to cut the perfect sized amount.
Flip over to the side with the crimped edges, places your dough, and you are ready to fill and close.
